Nil Design Kuyumcukent

A project in which we created an entirely new experience beyond the conventional jewellery store: the Nil Design Factory store in Kuyumcukent, where we designed an unusual way of displaying jewellery compared with traditional jewellery showcases.

Beyond the conventional showcase

At the 250 m² Nil Design Factory store in Kuyumcukent, Istanbul, the aim was to turn a jewellery store from a sales floor of counters and cabinets into an exhibition to walk through. Instead of being lined up on shelves, pieces are displayed one by one in glass boxes that project from the walls, and the store unfolds step by step like a gallery.

Façade and entrance

On the façade, black vertically fluted panels and the illuminated Nil Design Factory lettering make the brand legible from a distance, with the large circular logo beside the entrance as its signature. A large black-and-white photograph placed directly opposite the entrance opens a stage for passers-by and creates a sense of depth into the store.

Glass showcases projecting from the wall

The main idea of the project is a set of showcase walls made of frameless glass boxes. Boxes of different sizes and heights project from dark wall panels in a rhythmic arrangement, each lit from within, so that every piece reads on its own, as an object set apart from its neighbours.

Light and colour

Dark walls and ceiling gather the light onto the jewellery. The showcases’ internal lighting brings the pieces forward, while black track spotlights on the ceiling light the space in a measured way; the light, polished floor balances the dark walls.

Circulation and counter

The long, narrow space is composed like a gallery corridor lined with showcase walls on both sides. A low dark plinth along the base of the walls lifts the showcases off the floor, and a metal-clad counter sits at the end of the space without interrupting the flow of the display.
